Born in 1956,
Gauhar Raza, a scientist by profession, is a leading Urdu poet, social activist and documentary film maker engaged in popularizing the understanding of science among general public.
An accomplished poet, Gauhar Raza's concerns are deeply social and revolutionary in tone. His poem 'The Hands Dripping Blood' captures his restlessness at the hypocrisy of the selfappointed guardians of the society quite effectively. The opening lines go thus:
For how long will these blood dripping hands/ call themselves the managers of faith,/the upholders of God/The followers of Manu, the Law giver.
His poetry collection Zazbon Ki Lau Tez Karon has been noticed for the frankness of tone and for the social concerns that they take up and treat sensitively.
An electrical engineer by qualification, Raza received his M. Tech from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. For the past 20 years, Raza has worked in the area of Communications and Public Attitude towards an understanding of Science, and has published
four books, 26 papers, reports and articles.
Raza has also served on various national committees of Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti (BGVS), a platform of various NGOs, since its inception. BGVS has been the prime mover of National Literacy mission in India. He is also experienced in all aspects of video production, planning, directing, post-production work, and dissemination. He has produced ten video documentary films (using various video formats) on various socially relevant subjects during the past 15 years. Some of his other documentaries deal with issues such as: 'the delicate space-ship (on nuclear disarmament)', 'in dark times (an anti-fascist documentary)' and 'in search of love (a film on child rights)'.
